I Said, He Said

By Micki Goldberg, Court House

To the Editor:
I said, “I know you are a religious man, so I suppose you think that Mitt Romney did a good thing by including his strong belief in God when he voted to convict on the first article of impeachment.”
He said, “Don’t like him. Never have. He was just being political. What about Pelosi and her prayers? Fake.”
I said, “I was asking about Romney because you are both Republicans.”
He said, “You think he has never strayed from his marriage, or Joe Biden?”
I said, “I don’t believe in Romney’s beliefs, but I can say he was pretty brave to do what he did. As for being unfaithful, it’s been proven that the president does not respect women.”
He said, changing the subject, “Our economy is great. Can”t have socialism in our country.”
I said, “Subsidizing the farmers for not growing their crops is socialism. My Medicare is socialism. The current president is cutting aid to the poorest amongst us and supporting the wealthy.”
At this point, he went back to his office. He never addressed any of my points about Trump. Instead, he diverted to others.
That’s exactly what Trump does. In a civil society, having to be witness to bullying almost every day is horrific on so many levels.
In the last three years, I have attempted to understand his base. He continues to violate everything I hold dear about our country.
I thought my friend might have some kind words about a fellow traveler who followed his faith and belief. I wasn’t asking my friend to agree. I was just asking for the possibility of empathy or compassion.
Trump has his people so bamboozled, that they believe him, no matter what.
I have decided that, for the next eight months, I won’t even try to share facts, logic or appeals of decency. If the Republicans who support Trump, could be swayed by any of the above, they wouldn’t be supporters of a man who lies, in a country where hate crimes have increased since he took office.
We outnumber them. We know a demagogue who thinks he is king.
We will show up in November and vote. Bringing decency back to America won’t happen by useless banter with Trump supporters.
By the way, Bill Kristol, a very conservative Republican, who despises Trump, is part of a group bringing sanity back to his party. Check him out, if sanity and compassion define who you are.
