This is a personal column where I will bare my soul a little bit in hopes of gaining your understanding, and hearing your opinion on a topic that never goes away … Spout off. While Spout Off is a 24/7 online conversation on the Herald Web site, my wife edits the weekly print version every Monday. She comments frequently about how frivolous some of the Spouters are. I think the long running dialogue about feral cats almost caused her to “quit” her non-paying job and seek employment at Exit Zero … if they promise never to print a feral-cat story.
When I attend public functions, many an uncomfortable moment is spent listening to office holders of all types telling me how much they hate it. On the other hand, the general public loves it, telling me it is one of the best parts of the Herald because people “speak their piece” without fear.
So where do I fall in this discussion? I can guarantee this column won’t end with a neat conclusion like an hour-long TV drama. There are just too many messy angles to be considered and no one, easy answer.
Sometimes a few of the online spouters in particular are like adolescent children who seem eager to try out a newly learned dirty word. We “parents” are embarrassed but ask the readers to help in reporting such uncivil discussions to the administrator. Then the “grown-ups” begin talking again and there begins a wonderful and free exchange of information and ideas.

One such discussion led to the indictment and eventual dismissal of a public official in one of our towns. Do you think very many subordinates would have the courage to “rat” on his boss? There is a place for protecting a weaker voice.
If you are a “Spout Off” hater, don’t ignore the fact that many people use it to express gratitude, ask questions and pass on information. Where is the balance? Love it or hate it. Let me know what you think and perhaps add to what I always hope will be a community talking over the back-yard fence like neighbors.
