Why are many brands of cat food made in Thailand? Why are Levis jeans made in China instead of the U.S.? It’s no wonder 15 million people are unemployed. Estimates show up to 7 million jobs have been sent overseas since 2001 and they aren’t coming back any time soon if ever.
I’m sure you know how hard it is to find anything made in this country. That cake mix you bought in the supermarket last week may have been manufactured in China or Mexico.
Awhile back I had the idea of opening a store in North Cape May called the “Made in America Store,” and sell all kinds of items made only in this country. When I started looking for suppliers of products, I found surprisingly few manufacturers left in America, mostly small entrepreneurs.
I have been driving Toyotas for 28 years but after the recent “unintended acceleration” problems in over 8 million of their cars, if I had to replace my Toyota right now, I would probably go straight to a Chevy or Ford dealership and buy American.
A 2007 study conducted by the Deloitte Global Manufacturing Industry Group found 59 percent of the U.S. companies surveyed have operations in China. Why?
Did you know the average factory worker in the U.S. earns $15 per hour, while in China the average wage is 53 cents per hour? In addition, making your product overseas also does away with paying into Social Security and Medicare, there is no federal or state income tax, no labor unions, no health benefits, no pensions or retirement plans.
What American companies have done is take away jobs here to get a higher profit margin. There are currently 37 million people in the U.S. being fed by non-profit food banks. Job loss from off shoring operations has to stop now whether it take tariffs or stiff tax penalties.
Some use the word “protectionism,” as a negative but this country is on the verge of going down the drain. Jobs cannot continue to leave this country and this government needs to make it too expensive to manufacture overseas and ship products back to the America.
Will that happen? No. Congress has been bought and sold by corporate America and Wall Street. Our only hope is that oil prices get so high that it is no longer economically feasible to ship products from overseas back the to U.S.
It goes beyond manufacturing. Have you ever called a 1-800 customer service number and found yourself connected to someone in a foreign country who you have trouble understanding? Alamo Rent A Car moved its reservations center to India. Ditto for Citibank.
J.C Penny outsourced it human resources department to India. Cyber Futuristics reports research provided by Boston Consulting Group, which estimates that the number of jobs in India due to outsourcing will reach 30 million by 2020.
Here is just a partial list of companies that have outsourced American jobs from CNN’s Exporting American Web page: Aetna, A.G. Edwards, AIG, Albertson’s, Alcoa, Allstate, Amazon.com, American Express, American Greetings, Anchor Glass Container, Anheuser-Busch, AOL, AT&T, Bank of New York, Bank One, Bassett Furniture, BellSouth, Best Buy, Bissell, Black & Decker, Borden Chemical, Bose Corporation, Boeing, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Bumble Bee, Burlington House Home Fashions, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, Carrier, Caterpillar, Charles Schwab, Chevron Texaco, Citigroup.
Clorox, Coca-Cola, Columbia House, Comcast Holdings, Continental Airlines, Cooper Tire & Rubber, Corning, CSX, Cummins, Delco Remy, Dell Computer, Delta Air Lines, Direct TV, Dow Chemical, Dun & Bradstreet, DuPont, Eastman Kodak, Eli Lilly, Elmer’s Products, Equifax, Ethan Allen, Evenflo, Expedia, Exxon Mobil, Farley’s & Sathers Candy Co., Fayette Cotton Mill, Fedders Corporation, Federated Department Stores, Fender Musical Instruments, Fidelity Investments, Ford Motor Co., Franklin Mint, Franklin Templeton, Frito Lay, and Fruit of the Loom.
That’s only to letter “F” on the list. There’s a lot of alphabet left which resumes with General Mills and General Electric and many more.
Your government not only allowed this outsourcing to happen, they offered incentives. U.S. corporations abroad do not pay U.S. taxes on profits produced overseas. In addition, they can deduct foreign investment expenses from their U.S. income taxes. As a result, it is again cheaper to manufacturer overseas.
Before I run out of space, here’s a few more corporations that have outsourced manufacturing overseas: Goodrich, Goodyear, Hershey Foods, Home Depot, IBM, Johnson and Johnson, Kelloggs, Kimberly-Clark, Kraft Food, Mars, Maytag, Nabisco, Nike, Pepsi, Proctor & Gamble, Quaker Oats, Radio Shack, Sara Lee, Thomasville Furniture, Sprint, Tupperware, Walgreens, Verizon and Xerox. In other words: JUST ABOUT
