An exhibition of OC Fishing Club memorabilia continues at the Ocean City Historical Museum, 1735 Simpson Ave. The Museum is open Tues. through Sat. Featured in the exhibit is the Ocean City Cup, which was awarded to “teams that competed for it in surf-casting tournaments along the New Jersey coast from 1916 to 1986.” In 1916, the Cup went to the Asbury Park Fishing Club. Also displayed, are old trophies, medals, reels, lures, and rods. On loan to the exhibit, is a 100-year-old bamboo surf rod that is still in use today. The exhibit also features a slide show of old photos.
The Ocean City Fishing Club has the unique distinction of being the oldest, continuously-operating fishing club in the nation. Woodrow Wilson was the 28th president when the club was founded in 1913.
In addition to Ocean City’s Food Cupboard, some other Club community activities include a free Surf Fishing Tournament for Boys and Girls, which is co-sponsored with the City’s Recreation Dept. The Fishing Club also awards a “$500 scholarship to an Ocean City High School graduating senior who plans to continue his or her education in such fields as biology, oceanography, environmental sciences, or related fields.”
