OCEAN CITY — John R. Elliott 3rd Annual Hero Walk – Promoting the use of designated drivers to prevent drunk-driving tragedies is the goal for the John R. Elliott 5-K Walk. It will take place on Oct. 6, rain or shine. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Sports and Civic Center, 6th St. and the Boardwalk. Boardwalk and Downtown Table Sales will take place on Oct. 5-6, on the Boardwalk and Asbury Avenue from 6th to 14th Streets (no vendors). For information, call 525-9300.
Annual Mile Long Fall Block Party and Fireworks Spectacular will be held on Oct. 12. From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be over 400 crafters, food vendors, music, and more on Asbury Avenue, from 5th to 14th Streets. In the evening, there will be family night entertainment on the Boardwalk with fireworks beginning at 9:30 p.m. For further information, call 391-0240.
Indian Summer Weekend – Seafood vendors will be at the Music Pier located on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace from Oct. 12-14. For information, call 525-9300.
Upper Township — Gretchen Whitman of the New Jersey Audubon Center of Cape May will be the guest speaker at the first fall meeting of Best of Life to be held on Oct. 8. The topic of her talk will be “The Migration of Monarch Butterflies.” Best of Life is open to senior members, friends, and the public in the community. Join in the fun for a covered-dish luncheon, fellowship, and program at 11:45 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 20 N. Shore Rd. in Marmora. Cape May County Library will host New York Times best-selling author, Andre Dubus III, at 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 8. Doors will open at 4:00 p.m. The lecture and question-and-answer session will take place at the Sea Isle City Branch Library at 4800 Central Ave. A book signing and light refreshments will follow.
Dubus is the author of five books. His #1 New York Times bestseller, House of Sand and Fog, was adapted into an Academy-Award nominated motion picture and published in 20 languages.
