Prior to the September meeting of the Strathmere Improvement Association, the members gathered outside at the Firehouse, where a plaque was dedicated in memory of longtime residents, Donald and Elizabeth Bergus. The plaque was inscribed, “In Honor of their Dedication to the Strathmere Improvement Association and to their Beloved Town – Dedicated 9-10-2010.”

Everything is in apple-pie order for the 10th annual Applefest sponsored by the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township. “Granny Smith” will be at the Gandy Farmstead for a “Gala” time, not in “Rome,” but in Greenfield, at 26 Tyler Road, Route 616, on Sun., Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.
There is no admission charge and plenty of free parking.
During the day various activities will be taking place, including demonstrations by traditional craft artisans, children’s games, and horseshoe pitching for kids and adults. Relax and enjoy lunch while listening to live music. There will be a special appearance by Johnny Appleseed.
One of the highlights of the day will be an apple pie baking contest for children and adults. Ages 15 and under will vie for best pie in the junior division, and ages 16 and up will compete in the senior category. Judging begins at 2 p.m.
Please bring pies to the judges’ stand one hour before, and use a non-returnable pan. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded.

Self-defense for females – A special program for females 12 years of age and older will be held on Sat., Sept. 25, at the Cape May County Main Branch Library, 30 Mechanic St., in Court House, from 2 to 4 p.m. Defense methods will be taught against the most common street attacks and personal assaults. Mothers and daughters are welcome.
Walter Miller, a Black Belt instructor, who has been active in the martial arts for 30 years, will instruct the class.

Sun., Sept. 26 – The annual Boardwalk Corvette Show will feature over 350 cars with every model ever manufactured. The cars will be displayed from Sixth to 10th streets on the Boardwalk, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Ocean City Airport, 26th and Bay Ave., on Sunday morning. Cars will leave for the Boardwalk at approximately 11 a.m. An awards ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. in front of the Music Pier.
