UPPER NEWS NOTES – 6-16

By Rosemarie Whelan

Well done, Flotilla 81! Organized in June 1940, U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 81 of Ocean City, recently celebrating 70 years of service, has the distinction of being the oldest, continuously active flotilla in New Jersey, and also one of the oldest auxiliary flotillas in the country.
One of the many highlights in its distinguished history occurred during World War II. On May 11, l942, the Off-Shore Rescue and Observation Patrol along the Jersey Coast was started, and from that day until Dec. 6, 1942, the Flotilla had two boats every day patrolling the assigned course and exceeding all other Flotillas by covering over 8,000 miles.
By Dec. 6, 1942, the Navy and the Coast Guard had increased their number of men, boats, and planes and were able to assume these patrols.
For more information on the history of Auxiliary Flotilla 81, visit the website at www.uscgaux -ocnj.org. While on the website you can learn how to become a member, or you can sign up for upcoming courses which include GPS for Mariners, Suddenly in Command, and About Boating Safety. All courses are held at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church at Eighth and Central avenues in Ocean City.
