Too Many Problems Here to Pay for War

By Jack Fichter

“Washington has a lot of money. It has trillions for war, but no money for housing. Money for war, but no money for health care. Money for war, but no money for education. Money for war but no money to rebuild our cities. No money to create jobs, but money for war,” said U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).
I agree with Kucinich. We can’t continue to spend billions on war when are own country is crumbling.
More from Kucinich: “The Democrats took control of the Congress in 2006 with a promise to end the war in Iraq and it’s not enough for this Administration to slow-walk the end of the war, which could continue for years to come. And it’s not enough for a Democratic administration to escalate a war in Afghanistan at a time when there’s no clear objective and no end in sight of the contribution of blood and treasure, to a region which has never been conquered by any foreign country.”
“It’s time that we take a stand as citizens. And it’s also time to force Congress to take its Constitutional responsibility seriously. Article 1, Section 8 requires that Congress has the war-making power. It is absolutely imperative that Congress be required to assert its responsibility on behalf of the American people.
Congress is directly elected by the people. And Congress has to respond and step up to its responsibility to decide if we’re going to stay at war in Afghanistan. And so, soon, I will bring to the floor of the House a Privileged Resolution which will force a vote in the House as to whether or not we stay in Afghanistan,” he continued.”
The resolution, scheduled to be introduced today, will force a vote.
What a wonderful world we could have if we used the billons wasted on death and destruction for assuring everyone on this planet had enough food, water, healthcare and the opportunity for education. If everyone were getting a fair deal, there would be no terrorism.
Kucinich said President Barrack Obama did not go to Congress to expand the war in Afghanistan.
Can we continue to pour $100 billion a year into Afghanistan when over 15 million Americans are out of work?” asked Kucinich. He notes this year 10 million to 12 million Americans will lose their homes. In this country, 47 million people go to bed hungry every night while an equal number have no heath insurance.
Millions have lost their investments, and pensions.
Kucinich said he believes war hurts our economy because a huge amount of money is spent on missiles, tanks and high technology. Each soldier costs the U.S. close to $1 million per year. As many as 25 to 30 domestic jobs could be created for each military job. Kucinich has questioned if the U.S. is in Afghanistan to fight or fund the Taliban.
He said U.S. contractors are paying the Taliban to ensure safe transport of supplies to our soldiers who then use the supplies to fight the Taliban. Does that make any sense to you and what happens when the money runs out? They will remain an enemy.
Kucinich said he believes a war-based economy in this nation will eventually collapse. He said we have spent trillions on war and given trillions to Wall Street while our economic condition is bad.
The longer we stay in Afghanistan, the more opposition will surface in the form of insurgents, he said. Kucinich said it is impossible to create a democracy in a tribal country.
A report in the Washington Post last week showed that nearly $1 billion per year in cash, which is made up in part of aid from the U.S. along with money from opium sales, is being moved from Afghanistan to Dubai, “where friends and family of Afghanistan’s President Karzai have multimillion-dollar villas.”
Kucinich questioned if our soldiers were dying in Afghanistan to make that country safe for drug dealers and “crony capitalism.”
In his prayer for America, Kucinich said: “Let us pray for our children. Our children deserve a world without end. Not a war without end. Our children deserve a world free of the terror of hunger, free of the terror of poor health care, free of the terror of homelessness, free of the terror of ignorance, free of the terror of hopelessness, free of the terror of policies which are committed to a world view which is not appropriate for the survival of democratic values, not appropriate for the survival of a free people, not appropriate for the survival of a nation, not appropriate for the survival of the world.”
