I am sorry to do this to Joseph Cirrinicione because he is acting just as a Godly man should. We are admonished by Christ to do our good deeds quietly and not trumpet them about to garner praise by other men. His request to avoid publicity concerning his own sacrifice of salary is just impossible to honor.
In case you have not read or heard of his actions, let me share with you what he has proposed to the Lower Township Elementary School District. Because of the near bankrupt condition of our state budget, Gov. Christie has been forced to cut the amount of state aid to all schools or Lower Township. That meant loss of $1.2 million.
Rather than see even more drastic cuts in his own faculty and staff, Cirrinicione decided to “retire” and return in November as an interim superintendent at a starting salary of $ 43,600 with no benefits or paid sick days. By this personal sacrifice, he will save the district $120,000. That is what real leaders do; they make sacrifices in times of hardships and model what must happen up and down the ranks.
I do not know Cirrinicione’s personal resources beyond his district salary. Other district superintendents have suggested that he can make such give backs because of other monies available. That may or may not be; the fact is he gave up $120,000 to help his district. He has paved the way for others to consider what they might do in our economic crisis, and he has set the bar very high.
Cirrinicione has led the way, and we applaud his unselfish attitude.
