Strathmere Ocean Kayak Festival/and 5K Run takes place on Aug. 10 at Williams Ave. and the Beach. “Funds raised by the 5K Race will be put toward a lifeboat to be named in memory of Dick Alliger” (Trader Al) said Bill Handley, Captain of the Upper Township Beach Patrol. Alliger, a longtime resident of Strathmere and a former captain of the Upper Township Beach Patrol, passed away on March 26. He was the publisher and editor of The Jersey Cape Panorama Magazine, hosted the radio show Make Believe Ballroom, and was Public Relations Director for Sea Isle City.
The Strathmere Ocean Kayak Festival and 5K Run also includes a one-mile Health Walk. On-site registration begins at 7 a.m. and closes at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. Register for the Ocean Kayak Festival from 9 to 11 a.m. The event continues all day (usually ending around 3 p.m.). Do you have a fascination for constellations? If so, here’s a presentation, that’s full of celestial information. Derrick Pitts, a star in his own right, as Chief Astronomer and Planetarium Director of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, is the galaxy great who will guide us through the Strathmere sky. This star-studded event takes place on Aug. 16, at 8:45 p.m., at the Randolph Road Beach in Strathmere. All are welcome. The rain date is Aug. 17. Donations to the CFSWB (Citizens for Strathmere and Whale Beach) are optional. For further information, email ed@tettemer.net.

Upcoming Cape May County Library Events
42 – Is on view. The life of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, 42 will be shown on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m., at the Sea Isle City Branch Library, 4800 Central Ave., (263-7301). The film is rated PG-13.
The Fundamentals of Drawing – Instructed by Nancy Palermo, this six-week course begins on Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Upper Township Branch Library, 2050 Rt. 631 in Petersburg (628-2607). Visit www.cmclibrary.org to register, and also note the materials needed.
Join Jennie and Line Up – Jennie Ayres will teach a Beginners’ Line Dancing Course starting on Sept. 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Sea Isle City Branch Library, 4800 Central Ave. Learn country line dances, Philly line dances, and social dances which are all done locally.
Ayres has been teaching line dancing for “22 years,” and has had “three Dance Teams” that have “entertained in three local counties,” doing more than “600 shows, over the years, in nursing homes, senior centers, festivals, and churches.” Call 263-7301 or visit www.cmclibrary.org to register.
