Flotilla 81 and Second to None – U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 81 of Ocean City is the oldest Flotilla in New Jersey, and one of the first five formed in the country. Last year marked their 70th year of service.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer, non-military branch of the U.S. Coast Guard. One of their programs, which is available to the public, is the Vessel Safety Examination.
Recently, these free boat examinations took place at the All Seasons Marina in Ocean City. Certified Vessel Safety Examiners of Flotilla 81 who performed these safety checks were Bob Babezki, Vice-Commander of the Flotilla; Charles Wilkins, Staff Officer for Vessel Examinations; Terri Pierce, Public Affairs Officer, who is an Army veteran and “wanted to serve my country in a civilian aspect”; and Gloria Grumbein, who enjoys being a member of the Auxiliary, adding that “the people are wonderful.”
Among those who had their boats examined was Dale Satterfield of PA and Ocean City, who was riding by in his boat, Diversion, saw the members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and met with Babezki. As Satterfield had all of the required safety equipment on board and in good working order, Babezki placed a decal on his boat, which indicates that it is in compliance with federal and state requirements. These safety checks are “meant to be an educational experience.” No reports are “made to any law enforcement authority.”
Ed Shulde of Marmora, a former Coast Guard Auxiliary member, saw the advertisement for boat examinations at the Marina, had his boat checked, and as he had all of the necessary safety equipment in good working order, was also awarded a decal.
