Schiavo Library Bulletins – Two former Ocean City High School teachers visited the Schiavo Library in Strathmere recently to present a program about their children’s book. Carrots for Charlie was written by Rhonda Brazina and Ida Margolis and illustrated by Virginia Mulford.
Brazina was an elementary teacher and reading specialist in Columbus, Ohio. Margolis taught History and Psychology at Ocean City High School for 35 years and was chairperson of the Social Studies Department. Mulford was an art teacher for 36 years at Ocean City High School.
Carrots for Charlie is a story about a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Charlie, adopted by Max, who soon discovers “with the help of his neighbors and the vet,” that “Charlie’s health has been negatively affected by not getting enough exercise and by eating too many sweet treats.” This “story about friendship has an important message for children about health, nutrition, and caring for pets.”
When asked what prompted them to write the book, Margolis said that it was “our desire to write a book for children with a positive message about health and fitness, our concern about the obesity epidemic, and our passion for literacy.”
In response to a question about new books in the works, Margolis replied, “Yes, we are hoping for a series of Charlie books.”
She also spoke about “The Charlie Challenge for Good Health,” which is a “program to try to motivate children to do one thing to improve their health – anything they want to do from drinking low fat milk or water instead of a sugary beverage, or exercising 15 minutes more a day.” She added that “we would like a grant to supply children with “Charlie Challenge” bracelets and give all the children at our programs a copy of Carrots for Charlie.” For more information about the book, visit www.carrotsforcharlie.com.
