The Community Beach Party sponsored by the Strathmere Improvement Association (SIA) was a super, successful summer event. A large crowd gathered on the beach where the children played old-fashioned games including Frisbee, horseshoes, bean bag, and ring toss, with all children receiving prizes at each of the events. After the games, the kids participated in a flashlight fiddler crab hunt. The music and sing-a-long added to the early-evening occasion and was provided by Jim Maher, who is a liturgical musician at Our Lady of the Angels in Court House. Maher, who attended Temple University School of Music, also entertains locally in Strathmere and in Rio Grande.
Linda Bateman, president of the Strathmere Improvement Association, commented that “after the success of the Centennial Trolley last year, we realized there are a lot of folks in town who are looking for something to do as a family, and we wanted to come up with an idea to appeal to folks of all ages.” Elaine Holsomback, vice-president of the group who organized the event, remarked that “it’s important to the organization to sponsor family-oriented programs and activities.” She added that “we truly feel that we need to sponsor more activities that bring our community together. Our first Beach Party, centering on family and children, will be a stepping-stone to that goal.”
