OC & UPPER NEWS NOTES – 4-11

By Rosemarie Whelan

Webelos l Den, of Pack 79 in Marmora, will be earning their Citizen Pins for their Good Deed for the Community. Dave Jefferson, one of the Webelos in Pack 79, and a fourth grader in Upper Township Elementary School, wanted to help out his church with a fundraiser. “We haven’t had a big breakfast in a long time,” said Dave, and as a result, Dave’s Pancake Breakfast was put together and took place recently at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Marmora. Pat Whelan, Assistant Den Leader, prepared the pancakes, and the Webelos in his Den helped with the breakfast.

March of Dimes, South Jersey Shore, is in the final planning stages for its 2012 March for Babies Walk in Ocean City, and they can use the help of the community and businesses to have a successful walk. Anna Villari, community director for the March of Dimes, commented that “while financial donations are the most helpful to the March of Dimes mission, people can still help by donating their time.” The committee needs volunteers to help with registration, food distribution, check-points, and other functions.
Kim Adams, Logistics Chair, remarked that “in-kind donations of food and beverages are also needed.” While donations have been received, some items still needed for the walk are water, a Gatorade-type drink, granola/cereal bars, bags of ice, popcorn kernels, and other types of snack food. The committee can also use gift cards to local businesses where they can purchase items needed for the walk.
Jennifer Freeman, publicity chairperson, noted that the Ocean City walk site is still in need of financial sponsors, a “Start/Finish Sponsor” and “Check Point Sponsors.”
If you would like to volunteer, make a donation, or receive more information on sponsorship, please call Anna Villari at 856-375-8215 or email her at avillari@marchofdimes.com.
The Fifth Annual March for Babies Walk takes place on Sun., April 29, at the Music Pier on the Boardwalk. Registration is at noon; the Walk begins at 1 p.m.
