Lee Ireland, author of Place Names of the Jersey Shore – Why Did They Name It That? was the guest speaker at the November meeting of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township (HPSUT). Ireland, who was “born in Atlantic City,” and “raised in Ventnor,” has been “collecting information for 20 years.” The book “covers Brigantine to Cape May, all Atlantic and Cape May County inland towns, as well as Delaware Bay communities.”
Ireland quoted Nicholas Cage from the movie, National Treasure 2, “Everything I am is because of my ancestors.” Ireland said, “I would add, to a significant degree, the places that your ancestors named described those places. They named them for recreation, sustenance, and faith.”
Ireland divided his talk into various categories, one of which was “Not So Obvious,” that included the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, which “is named for Alex Boardman, not the boards you walk on.”
Another category was “Corrupted Names” and included Marven Gardens. “Misspelled, Marvin Gardens on the Monopoly game board, this is a housing development that borders Ventor City.” Marven Gardens is a “combining form of the words Margate and Ventnor.”
Tuckahoe, included in the “Native American” category, “is derived from a Lenni Lenape Indian tribe word, meaning, ‘Where the deer are shy and hard to approach.’”
Ireland’s book, “which is thoroughly researched and documented, includes many photos,” and “each entry contains GPS coordinates.” His book may be purchased at http://tiny.cc/nn4z7.
The book on which Ireland is currently working is titled America’s Pirates, Volume One, The Central Atlantic States, and “publication is expected in September of 2013.” “The America’s Pirates book series will eventually cover the entire east coast of the United States and Gulf of Mexico in five volumes.”
Ireland’s “family in New Jersey goes back to the 1700s.” He “has served his country through the nation’s fire service for the last 40 years.”
At the conclusion of Ireland’s talk, Sonia Forry, Historian of the Society, presented him with a copy of the book, A History of Upper Township and Its Villages, which was compiled by members of the HPSUT.
