People gather annually in the Washington, D.C. area for a four-day Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) where speakers from around the nation and beyond share their thoughts on a wide range of topics affecting the body politic. My wife, Patricia, suggested that it would present a great opportunity to spend a few days with our grandchildren, Collin and Isabella, by bringing them to D.C. for a few days to sightsee and attend the conference. So we did it last week.
Just because it was a meeting of conservatives did not mean that it was particularly Republican friendly. The speakers tended to blame both the Republicans and the Democrats for the mess we find ourselves in as a nation, and also blame them both for the fact that only 19 percent of Americans say they trust the government always or most of the time, according to the Pew Research Center. This is down from almost 80 percent a half century ago, according to National Public Radio.
One of the sessions I attended had a panel of speakers including two young, conservative, Christian actresses who work in Hollywood. One said, that as recently as two years ago, being a conservative Christian meant that they were out of step with Hollywood’s prevailing culture, but that has, in some ways, changed today.
Her experience has taught her that Hollywood is driven by money, not ideology; they want to create films which people will attend and recommend to their friends. She has been part of over a hundred sessions where ideas for movies were discussed, and the entire focus is on creating something in line with the culture. Their game plan is, play to the culture and people will come.
She added, “I want to be part of pictures that reflect my faith.” For those of us who want to encourage wholesome films, she encourages us to go to them as soon as they hit the theatres, to attend within the first few days. The film might open in 2,100 theatres; if it does well, it increases to, say, 2,800 theatres the next week; if it does poorly, it might drop to 1,400. She stated further, don’t be too hard on the producer for not being purist in the Christian faith, as it is a step-by-step process to clean up the flicks. She holds the opinion that the reason conservative voices are starting to be heard is because the movie industry is finding out people like to go to motion pictures that make them happy.
These actresses disagreed on whether to play the role of, say, a prostitute. One said, “I refuse.” The other lady takes the part offered, if the story line points out the degradations of being in the world’s oldest profession.
