Herald Wins Awards 5.23.2006

RIO GRANDE – Herald Newspapers walked off with a dozen awards at the Mid-Atlantic Community Papers Association (MACPA) spring conference in Harrisburg, Pa.
They include six awards for advertising, three for advertising promotion, two for writing and one for community service.
 The first place in community service went to the annual 4-H section produced by the Features Department in conjunction with the Production Department.
The advertising awards:
 First place, Platt’s Furniture, sales rep, Beth Huber; graphic designer, Lisa Murphy.
Second place, Casey’s Bar & Grill, sales rep, Karen Dickinson; Avalon Links Restaurant, sales rep, Rein Wokock. Graphic designer Chris Cusick designed both.
Third place, Sole Italian Restaurant, sales rep, Steve Mehl; graphic designer Kimberly Lynch; and Precision Cars, sales rep, Wokock; designer Cusick.
Honorable mention, Dellas, sales rep, Mehl; graphic designer, Lynch.
The three advertising promotions included a first to Super Bowl XL, second to New Jersey State Firefighters, and third for the Dining & Entertainment sections. Production was cited for the Super Bowl; Features and Production combined on the other two.
Editor Joe Zelnik received a first place in editorials for his Aug. 5 column that criticized the county for abolishing its juvenile community service program.
And he received a second place for his Aug. 10 column in which he “interviewed” an Adidas running shoe who dreamed of being a Florsheim.
Those same two columns won second and first place, respectively, in the recent New Jersey Press Association Better Newspapers Contest.
