On Sept. 17, 1787, 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed a divinely inspired document – our U.S. Constitution.
“Constitution Day” is a federal holiday in which we are encouraged to count our “Blessings of Liberty” bequeathed sacrificially to our care by the Founding Fathers. We have been so blessed as a nation that millions are still drawn to America with the hope of liberty.
Unique in history, our Constitution is not law directed at regulating and limiting the activities of the people, but rather the government. “The essence of freedom is the proper limitation of government.”~ Edmund Burke. Our Constitution works well when obeyed.
Yet we have come a long way from our Rule of Law being just a few pages of parchment. Bills are now routinely passed with thousands of unread pages. When people complain about the federal government, 99 times out of 100, without realizing it, they are describing some activity in which the federal government is venturing beyond the limits authorized by the Constitution.
One common area of complaint is the wasteful give-away of our labors (taxes) as foreign aid.
Americans work hard and pay high taxes. It is bad enough when so much of that tax money is wasted on dubious programs here in America, but giving it away as foreign aid really is a slap in the face of every taxpayer.
Time and again, churches, private organizations, and individual Americans respond to famine, floods, and earthquakes worldwide with more money, goods, and services than our government or any other.
Americans are the most charitable people in the world, but when charity is coerced, it stops being charity. Politicians earn far more than the average citizen. If they choose to personally reach into their own pockets for foreign aid, they have every right to do so.
They have no right to force anyone else to donate. There is nothing in the Constitution, which gives them that kind of supremacy over us.
Without debating the pros and cons of foreign aid or the opportunities for abuse by foreign powers, Congress and the president simply lack any constitutional authority whatsoever to act as welfare agents to foreign governments.
I therefore object completely to the “Foreign Assistance Revitalization and Accountability Act,” S. 1524, introduced by Sen. Robert Menendez, which coincides with a House bill “Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act,” H.R. 2139.
Both bills call for the president to craft “a new strategy for America to reduce global poverty and provide the funding for global development.” President Obama has already requested $58.5 billion for foreign aid this year. His objective is to double foreign assistance by 2015.
Based on a White House fact sheet of Obama’s stated goals, this foreign aid is to be used in part to “avert millions of unintended pregnancies.”
Averting pregnancies refers to abortion. I believe most Americans are opposed to abortion, but even those who are not opposed should not be forced to fund them here — let alone worldwide.
We must stop yet another giveaway of the fruits of our labor (as well as our children’s and grandchildren’s future labor).
To help prevent the planned increase of “international welfare,” contact U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez and Congressman Frank LoBiondo to express opposition to S. 1524 and H.R. 2139. (Note: the Senate bill has already been placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar.)
It is up to the American people to read the Constitution, understand it and defend it else the light of liberty entrusted to us will soon be just a smoking wick.
