Cape May Resident Discusses Wars and Taxes

By William Murphy

Soon congressional decisions will have to be made regarding Syria. The republicans are still talking Benghazi, where four people were killed. However, we must be reminded that the Iraq war took the lives of some 4,000 Americans.
In 1983 under Reagan, there were 240 marines killed in Lebanon. Did Reagan retaliate? He cut and ran. Also, while we’re on the discussion of chemical weapons, it was Reagan who supplied Saddam Hussein with the same weapons in 1985. Where was the outcry then?
Regardless with what happens with Syria, we still have a major problem with our economy. Again, it’s imperative to not forget how we got here. The sad condition with our country is not because of Benghazi or Syria as they would have you believe. But rather the decisions and idiocy conducted between the years 2000 and 2008.
We had 9/11. We had Iraq. We increased our debt $5 trillion plus. When history decides the cost of Iraq, will it be $3 trillion or more? Disgraceful. Own up America and face the real truth.
Also, did we need 10 years in Afghanistan? Now we’re solving our debt problems by cutting Head Start? Preposterous. Remember who raised taxes between 1980 and 1988? Also, he left us $4 trillion in debt. The people I’ve been referring to, in effect, have destroyed the largest economy in the world in the last 30 years. Follow the debt, the deficits and the wars.
Did we need that? Does it affect today? Of course it does. Let’s talk taxes.
I consider it a privilege to pay taxes. Some don’t. How do we think governments and civilizations work? We’ve never financed a war without increasing taxes. That is, not until Iraq. Today we are even afraid to call taxes “Taxes.” It’s now revenue. Revenues are the answer and everyone should be willing to pay their fair share to save the country. Not saving the country would mean disaster. Would you rather that? Thus, we all lose.
