CAPE ISSUES — Tax Spending Analysis Is Moving Forward

By Pete Jesperson

The Cape Issues team of concerned citizens meets monthly to review the progress made by team members on a variety of issues that affect the property taxes of the citizens of Cape May County.
The team recently completed the collection of all the 2010 municipal budgets and these have been posted on the Cape May County Herald website for public access.
Further analysis of the budgets is ongoing to determine the best way to present expenditures, potential cost reductions and existing best practices or areas needing improvement.
The Central Dispatch committee is finishing its collection and analysis of municipal spending in that area and the trash collection committee has met with the County Utilities Authority and is currently analyzing a shared services study for seven municipalities that could potentially result in reduced trash collection costs.
Additional committees are studying school spending, police compensation and auxiliary fire and police initiatives.
