The Murphy administration has announced a $2.94 million grant for repairs and improvements to the 96th Street bridge between Middle Township and Stone Harbor.
The grant is one of 38 Local Bridges Fund grants totaling $44 million designed to help counties maintain bridges in good repair.
The grant for the 96th Street Bridge will fund bascule replacement and other improvements.
“To ensure New Jersey has a safe, modern, and efficient transportation system, we must continue to invest in local infrastructure,” Gov. Phil Murphy said. “The Local Bridges Fund provides counties with the necessary resources to make critical bridge improvements while taking the pressure off local property taxes.”
The program is funded through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund, which provides money for each county for bridge improvement. Each county receives $1 million, with amounts beyond that allotted based on a formula that takes into account the total bridge deck area in the county and the amount of deck area in poor condition.
The grants focus on the repair, reconstruction and replacement of bridges with the greatest structural deficiencies. Since the fund’s creation in 2009, 590 bridges have been improved.
