Ninth and West Closing for Emergency Sewer Repair

Ocean City Logo

From Ocean City

The intersection of Ninth Street and West Avenue will be closed for at least two weeks starting on Friday, Oct. 27 to allow a New Jersey American Water contractor to begin the repair of a sewer line failure from Ninth Street to 16th Street.

Detours will direct vehicles to use Eighth Street or 14th Street to move across town between Bay Avenue and Asbury Avenue. For safety reasons, the area around the intersection at Ninth and West will also be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists.

This sewer line replacement will take place two blocks at a time, starting at Ninth Street, and work is expected to continue through the winter.

A representative of the contractor has visited every business along the project route, and the city will also provide regular updates. Access to all businesses will remain open throughout the project with signs directing local traffic. Please use caution when moving around barricades.

West Avenue traffic will be affected by two other projects.

A contractor for the city has begun work on a paving and drainage project on West Avenue from 18th Street to 26th Street. One intersection at a time will be affected as this work continues. This regularly scheduled road improvement project is funded in part by a state Department of Transportation grant.

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority has begun a major repair of the wastewater pumping station at 32nd Street and West Avenue. While the intersection and roadway will not be closed, there will be a lane shift in effect. Please plan alternative routes to avoid delays during these important and ongoing projects.
