Youngsters catch a wide variety of fish in OC

By On Deck Staff

Under an azure sky and with an outgoing tide, 90 young anglers competed in Ocean City’s 34th Boys and Girls Surf Fishing Tournament.
The free event for youngsters 8 to 16 took place at the North End Beach near the Ocean City-Longport Bridge. During the two-hour tournament, they reeled in striped bass, flounder, kingfish, sharks, a cow-nosed ray and what seemed like several tons of seaweed.
The event is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC) and the Ocean City Department of Recreation. Members of the fishing club were on the beach to measure and record each catch and to offer help when needed.
Julia Mulhern, 8, Clyde, N. C. caught the most fish by a girl, Lauren Koelsch, 8, caught the largest fish by a girl (26-inch striped bass), and Connor Rowe, 16, Lancaster, Pa., caught the most fish and the largest fish among the boys.
The winners in each of three age groups were the following:
8-10 years of age: Julia Mulhern, first place; Lauren Koelsch, second; and John McElroy, 10, third place.
11 to 13 years: Steve Heinz, 13, first; Chris Serbeck, 11, second; Paul Cochran, 13, third.
14 to 16 years: Trisha Norton, 15, first; Connor Rowe, 16, second; and Ryan Steranko, 16, third.
The club’s next event will be the 42nd annual Ocean City Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament for adult teams and individuals on Saturday, Sept. 19.
