WOODBINE – Woodbine State Police Station was notified by a resident who was contacted by someone who said they were from the Woodbine State Police and that they had locked up their relative and needed money for bail.
The alleged scammer put someone else on the phone who quickly pretended to be the relative pleading for a bailout. They then stated he could be bailed out over the phone.
“Please know that we, nor any other police agency would ever accept or ask for money over the phone,” stated Woodbine Station Commander Lt. Doug Pearson in an email to the Herald. “It is possible that we would call someone to let them know a relative was arrested but never would we ask for bail over the phone.
“If it was legit, you would be given directions on how to pay any bail. This would be through and at the municipal court, jail, or by going to the local police department itself. The State Police never collects money ourselves, although most municipal police departments do (but not over the phone).
“Never give out any personal information unless you are absolutely sure who it is. If ever not sure, ask them for a phone number and then say you will call them back. You’ll know pretty quickly if it is a scam or not.”
If in doubt, Pearson urges residents to call Woodbine State Police Station at 609-861-5698.
