WILDWOOD ─ “It’s terrible,” said John Summers who spends his time, along with his wife, between Wildwood and Philadelphia. Referring to a vacant property neighboring his on Rio Grande Avenue, Summers was chosen by concerned neighbors to bring their plight to the attention of City officials.
Time went by. Although code enforcement and inspector John Davis came out to the property, nothing seemed to happen for Summers. “Asbestos is coming out, we can’t breathe that,” Summers told the Herald as he watched and waited. “I know they’re doing all they can.”
Summers reached out to the Herald and asked if someone could look into the matter further.
Calls went out to Commissioner Peter Byron and John Davis. Byron, who looked up the address, said he was not aware of the matter and personally visited the location on July 27. Davis also revisited the property and spoke with Summers. Summers was encouraged to attend the Commissioners’ meeting July 27.
During the public portion of the meeting, Summers said, “I would like to say thank you.” After weeks of frustration, Summers was encouraged by the city’s interest. “I’m used to Philadelphia,” Summers said. “It’s brutal,” he added, referring to the waiting process in Philadelphia.
Davis confirmed that the owners, two females from north Jersey, have been fined and taken to court. Wildwood is waiting on the home being razed. The temporary lull in action is also attributed to a recent strike of Verizon workers who were supposed to install a pole. “I’m kind of at the mercy of the courts,” said Davis.
Byron also commented on the frustrations of those who wait on the “process of law.” Though understandable, certain procedures must be followed.
“Thank you, thank you,” Summers concluded his statements at the meeting as resident and city officials continue to work together to make Wildwood a better place to live.
