WILDWOOD ─ Despite the July summer sizzle, Wildwood Beach Patrol hosted the eighth annual “21 Down” event on a stretch of Wildwood beach July 18.
According to Beach Patrol Chief Steve Stocks, 40 families attended the event. “It was our largest turnout ever,” Stocks said.
21 Down gives families an opportunity to “enjoy” the beach for a good cause: families who care for members diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Stocks described the event as an opportunity for “families to get a day at the beach” and enjoy the surf and sand safely, under the watchful eye of beach patrol members.
Lifeguards “play with the kids” and provide surfing equipment and other items for more fun in the sun. “Surfing is really popular,” Stocks said.
The beach patrol also provided shade under a tent; food and beverages were served throughout the day.
According to Stocks, families began arriving around 10 a.m. and the event “wrapped up” by 4:30 p.m. Despite high inland temperatures, Stocks described conditions as “comfortable” as young people and adults frolicked in the surf.
Finally, beach patrol members packed up their equipment, and families who received the gift of a day at the beach will likely treasure the memories, friends met and sparkled water drops cascading in the July sunlight.
