Wind, Rain Down Trees, Flood Roads

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE — Flooded roads, downed trees, and power interruptions were part of the weather phenomenon Cape May County residents experienced Friday, Sept. 11.
An early-morning thunderstorm, about 3:30 a.m. shook many from sleep, and the storm persisted for several hours.
Wildwood schools were closed, as was the Sea Isle City branch of the Cape May County Library, according to a county release.
Those entering or leaving Wildwood could use Hand Avenue onto Route 47 after high water closed access earlier in the day. Route 47 was accessible in both directions by about 9 a.m.
The National Weather Services issued a thunderstorm and flash flood warning throughout the morning, and a tornado watch was in effect until noon.
Many side streets experienced flooding as storm sewers were taxed or clogged, causing work for public works crews.
