UPDATE: Ice Conditions Halt Cape May – Lewes Ferry Operations for Second Day

By Press Release

NORTH CAPE MAY – Due to significant ice accumulations and wind conditions in the Cape May Canal and Delaware Bay, Cape May-Lewes Ferry (CMLF) officials announced this morning that the Ferry will not operate its abbreviated schedule today, Friday, Feb. 20. The first scheduled departure this morning was cancelled yesterday afternoon.
“We were staying ahead of Mother Nature for a while early this week, working another ferry to clear out the Cape May Canal and partnering with the Pilots Association using a tug to break up the ice around the berthing facilities in Lewes,” stated Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations, in a release. “Unfortunately, the conditions deteriorated to the point that we can’t operate. The bitter cold temps and wind have conspired to cause ice conditions that we can’t break through. We’re hopeful that we can resume service this weekend and will be looking forward to the warmer temps that are forecasted.”
The following departures will not operate today:
Cape May, NJ
11:00 a.m.
6:00 p.m.
Lewes, DE
12:45 p.m.
7:45 p.m.
The first round trip scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21 is also cancelled. The following departures will not operate tomorrow morning:
Cape May, NJ
7:30 a.m.
Lewes, DE
9:15 a.m.
Gehrke added that given the current conditions and anticipated frigid temperatures overnight, additional departures may also be affected. “It’s important that travelers who plan to use the Cape May-Lewes Ferry tomorrow confirm that we are operating before coming to the Ferry,” Gehrke noted.
Travelers who plan to use the Cape May – Lewes Ferry tomorrow are urged to call the Cape May – Lewes Ferry Guest Services Center at 1-800-64-FERRY (1-800-643-3779) or visit us online at www.cmlf.com.
