Stone Harbor Updates Owners on Storm

By Press Release

Stone Harbor — According to a new advisory posted by the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service, Hurricane Sandy has picked up speed and has its sights set on the southern New Jersey coastline towards the Delaware Bay. The storm is still a Category 1 hurricane and is now moving in a north northwesterly direction at 18 mph. Landfall may occur on Oct. 29.
Many sections of Stone Harbor experienced coastal flooding during Monday morning’s high tide event. Local streets were flooded in the community. A mandatory evacuation order is still in effect for the Borough of Stone Harbor and remains in effect indefinitely. Any vehicles wishing to leave Stone Harbor may only do so when it’s safe; no re-entry will be allowed into Stone Harbor until the evacuation order is lifted and the Stone Harbor Office of Emergency Management declares the Borough safe for travel.
There have been some scattered power outages throughout the community Sunday night and Monday morning. Travel to and from Stone Harbor is impossible Monday morning via the Garden State Parkway; the Parkway has been closed by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in both directions from Exit 38 in Atlantic City south to Exit 0 in Cape May.
Sandy is a very wide storm stretching several hundred miles wide. Sandy is forecast to take a hook and turn into the Jersey Shore, hitting somewhere between Cape May and Monmouth counties. Hurricane force winds, significant coastal flooding, and up to ten inches of rain are forecast for Stone Harbor as part of this event.
Another significant coastal flooding event is very possible during Monday evening high tide in Stone Harbor. Any resident who has the means and ability to evacuate the Borough may have a final chance to leave the community during low tide Monday afternoon.
