Snow Causes Countywide Closures; County Gov’t. Remains Open

WILDWOOD — Cape May County’s first heavy snowfall of the season closed schools and hindered some county services, but county government is open for business.
According to 98.7 The Coast Radio, the following county schools are closed due to weather:
• Apple Tree – Both locations, Cape May Court House and Green Creek
• Cape Christian Acad-Cape May Ct House Closed
• Cape May City School District Closed
• Cape May Co. Special Services District Closed
• Cape May Co. Vocational Sch District Closed
• Dennis Township School District Closed
• Lower Cape May Regional School District Closed
• Lower Township School District Closed
• Middle Township School District Closed
• North Wildwood City School District-Margaret Mace Closed
• Ocean City School District Closed
• Our Lady Star Of The Sea – Cape May Closed
• Sea Isle City School District Closed
• St Ann School – Wildwood Closed
• Stone Harbor School District Closed
• Upper Township School District Closed
• West Cape May School District Closed
• Wildwood Catholic High School Closed
• Wildwood City School District Closed
• Wildwood Crest School District Closed
• Woodbine School District Closed
According to Cape May County Communications Director Lenora Boninfante, road crews began salting and plowing county roads and bridges early Sunday evening and continued through the night.
All Cape May County Senior Centers will be closed today and no homebound meals will be delivered. In preparation for this storm, all meal recipientsreceived five days worth of meals, she said.
Also, Fare Free Transportation will not be operating a regular schedule today. Dialysis and essential services will be provided.
Cape May County Park and Zoo staff has been working to clear all county parks and the zoo.
The Cape May County Zoo, park north and park south will remain closed today so that we can concentrate on the clean up at The Cape May County Park in Cape May Court House – Park central could open when the roads are cleared. However, if the wind picks up, we will stay closed for the safety of potential visitors.
The Cape May County Park Advisory Board meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
today at the Beesley House on Route 9 has been cancelled. At this time, no
new date has been selected.

Lower Township trash and recycling will not be collected today due to the storm.
Due to high winds and white-out snow conditions, the 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Cape May-Lewes Ferry (leaving North Cape May) and the 12:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. (departing Lewes) have been canceled for today, March 2. The ferry plans to operate the 6 p.m. North Cape May and the 7:45 p.m. Lewes as scheduled.
Tuesday March 3, 2009, the CMLF will resume normal operations.

The Avalon Borough Hall and the Avalon Free Public Library are both closed today, Monday, March 2.
The decision was made to close both facilities due to bad driving conditions associated with the snowstorm on Sunday and Monday, March 1 and 2.
All streets in Avalon have been plowed by the Avalon Department of Public Works. Avalon received about five inches of snow from the storm as of daybreak, Monday, with another inch or two expected before the storm completely pulls away from the Cape May County region.
