Accueweather.com reports the arrival of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday threatens to spoil what would otherwise be a nice weekend for areas from New York State to Virginia.
An area of high pressure will allow the weekend to begin on a delightful note across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. Unlike last weekend, humidity will remain absent from both regions.
Afternoon temperatures on Saturday will also remain comfortable throughout the Northeast. Highs will pleasantly warm into the 70s in Boston, Mass.; Burlington, Vt.; and Syracuse, N.Y.
Though not as blazing hot as last Saturday, the air will still feel warm to residents of the mid-Atlantic. Highs in the mid-80s are in store for Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Richmond, Va., will crack the 90-degree mark.
Dry weather will compliment the day from Maine to Virginia. The exception will be the central Appalachian Mountains, where spotty afternoon thunderstorms will ignite.
The pleasant conditions expected on Saturday, however, will not last into Sunday. A storm system currently over the Upper Midwest will be to blame for spoiling the nice weekend weather.
The storm system will push showers and thunderstorms over places stretching from New York State to Virginia Saturday night into Sunday. An increase in humidity will occur as the system approaches.
The wet weather will not only put a damper on outdoor activities. Flash flooding could also ensue, especially in places that receive several rounds of showers or thunderstorms.
While flooding is a concern, the showers and thunderstorms on Sunday will actually prove to be beneficial by easing rainfall deficits.
The United States Drought Monitor reported on Thursday that some places from eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey to northeastern North Carolina were enduring a moderate drought.
The drought status has become severe across parts of southeastern Virginia. Richmond has only received 1.15 inches of rain this month. That is 25 percent of what typically falls each July.
An outbreak of severe weather is not expected on Sunday. However, any thunderstorm that rumbles will spark dangerous lightning. If you hear thunder, remember you are close enough to get struck.
The showers and thunderstorms will not spoil the weekend across all of the Northeast. An area of high pressure will remain firmly in place over New England, allowing dry weather to prevail.
