National Weather Service Announces High Risk of Rip Currents

By Herald Staff

COURT HOUSE – A high risk of rip currents has been issued by The National Weather Service for today, Aug. 27.
Surf height will be 3-5 feet.
“A high risk of rip currents implies that wind and/or wave conditions will support the development of very strong rip currents,” said The National Weather Service in a statement. “These rip currents will be life threatening to anyone who enters the surf.”
According to The National Weather Service, beach patrols are reporting swimming restrictions at several of the New Jersey and Delaware beaches. The swells and associated rip currents will increase further through tonight.
The high risk of rip currents will continue through much of the day and will remain in effect until 11 p.m. tonight

A moderate risk of rip currents has been issued by The National Weather Service for today, Aug. 26.
The moderate risk of rip currents will continue through today and tonight.
“A moderate risk of rip currents means wind and or wave conditions support stronger or more frequent rip currents,” said The National Weather Service in a statement. “Always have a flotation device with you in the water. Swim only in life guarded areas.”
The National Weather Service predicts “although Hurricane Cristobal is expected to track well to our East, long period swells may lead to an enhanced risk for the formation of dangerous rip currents Aug. 27 and Aug. 28.”
