COURT HOUSE – National Weather Service in Mount Holly issued the following beach hazards statement, which is in effect for our area through Wednesday evening, Aug. 31:
“Atlantic Ocean waters along New Jersey and Delaware beaches will be rough at times this week and possibly through Labor Day weekend.
“A combination of probable multiple tropical cyclones of varying intensity in the Atlantic Basin … well to the southeast of New Jersey and Delaware this week … and periods of onshore wind … will noticeably increase the danger for the formation of rip currents. Tuesday, Aug. 30 and Wednesday, Aug. 31 should see some of the roughest conditions. There is a concern that the rip current risk could also be elevated this weekend.
“If going to the shore or area beaches Aug. 30 or Aug. 31, be alert for dangerous rip currents and swim only in designated areas patrolled by lifeguards.
“Swells from tropical systems have arrived and should continue to build Aug. 30 and Aug. 31. The breakers in the beach swimming zone will likely be larger. This will increase the risk for dangerous rip currents and can also knock swimmers and waders into the sand.
“Swim only in designated areas watched by lifeguards. Swimming after the lifeguards go home and where lifeguards do not have you in sight raises the risk of injury or death due to rip currents.”
