WILDWOOD – A video of two Wildwood police officers arresting a woman on the beach went viral online over Memorial Day Weekend.
According to The Press of Atlantic City, video of the incident shows two police officers May 26, punching and wrestling Emily Weinman, 20, of Philadelphia, to the ground after they stopped her for alleged underage drinking.
The two officers were reassigned to administrative duty pending an internal affairs investigation, according to a statement on Wildwood Police Department’s Facebook page.
Police Chief Robert Regalbuto said in the statement that while he finds the video to be alarming, he does not want to rush to any judgement until having the final results of the investigation.
City officials told The Press of Atlantic City that there is more to the story than just what was caught on the video, including the possibility Weinman kicked one of the cops in the groin and spit on the officers. The investigation will include looking at the officers’ body camera footage.
Weinman was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault by spitting bodily fluids at/on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction, and minor in possession of alcohol.
Wildwood Police encouraged anyone who may have been present during the altercation and has supporting video that could assist in their investigation to contact Detective Lt. Kenneth Gallagher at (609) 522-0222. The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Unit will also be assisting in the investigation.
The individual(s) listed is/are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
