CAPE MAY – A local service station contacted the Cape May Police Department to report the discovery of what appeared to be a pipe bomb under a vehicle that was being serviced June 20 at 4:13 p.m.
Fire units were dispatched to the scene along with the Atlantic City Bomb Squad.
Prior to the arrival of Fire and Police units the suspicious device had been relocated from the service station to a vacant lot across the street from the station.
The Command Post was established at Pittsburgh Ave. and Texas Ave. Due to the location of the device, local properties and businesses were evacuated and Cape May Fire Police re-routed any outbound vehicular traffic to the West Cape May Bridge.
The vehicle owner was on location and met with local investigators. The Atlantic City Bomb Squad determined the device was not an explosive device. Once the area was made safe, businesses and residents were permitted to return.
