An encampment of Civil War Union soldiers will make history come alive at Historic Cold Spring Village the weekend of July 12-13.
The reenactors of Company D, 12th New Jersey Volunteers will bring camp life and a field hospital of the Army of the Potomac to the shaded lanes of the Village from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
“The Union reenactors are camping and living the way actual soldiers would have done during the Civil War,” said Jim Stephens, HCSV deputy director for education and interpretation.
“If you have ever wondered how the Union Army lived, slept, ate and trained, this is an event you will want to attend.”
Throughout the weekend, authentically clad living historians will discuss and demonstrate drills, weapons, medical care, uniforms, equipment, and day-to-day camp life.
An extensive and fascinating collection of Civil War-era weaponry will be on display in the Welcome Center by historian Jack Meyers.
At 1 p.m. on both days, there will be a presentation of The Story of Old Glory at the Village Gazebo, a lively discussion of the origins and history of the American flag. This entertaining and educational weekend of living history is sponsored by Cape Regional Medical Center.
Historic Cold Spring Village is located on Route 9, three miles north of Victorian Cape May and a mile and a half west of the southern terminus of the Garden State Parkway.
