TRENTON – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced the start of a safety improvement project that will require temporary lane and shoulder closures on Route 50 from Upper Township to Hamilton in Atlantic County.
From 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, beginning April 26 and continuing each night April 27, April 30, and May 1, NJDOT’s contractor, South State, Inc., is scheduled to begin temporary alternating traffic patterns to mill and pave two separate stretches of road between Upper Bridge Road and Farm Road in Upper Township and 14th Street and Old Egg Harbor Road in Hamilton.
After the completion of milling and paving, the contractor will begin application of High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) on the 24-mile stretch of Route 50 between Kruk Terrace in Upper Township and Chestnut Street in Hamilton. Beginning May 15, the contractor will work nightly, Monday through Thursday, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day. Work on Friday and the weekend is restricted during the summer vacation season. The project is expected to be completed in the fall.
The $2.1 million project consists of repairing the roadway and applying a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) on 20 horizontal curves along Route 50. The higher pavement friction helps motorists maintain better control while driving in both wet and dry conditions. This treatment is used in high-crash locations and is proven to significantly enhance motorist safety.
Motorists should exercise caution while driving near the work zone and expect temporary lane closures and alternating traffic patterns. Over the course of the project, access to properties and business will be maintained at all times.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
