Roosevelt Boulevard Bridge Will Be Temporarily Closed To All Traffic Oct. 9-10

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – Roosevelt Boulevard Bridge between Ocean City and Marmora will be closed from 10 p.m. Oct. 9 to 5 a.m. Oct. 10 to install the concrete construction barrier curb and temporary traffic signal system for the second phase of the Bridge Deck Rehabilitation project. When traffic is permitted on the bridge at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, the eastbound (inbound) lane will be closed to traffic and alternating traffic will be maintained in the westbound lane by a temporary traffic signal system.
The project involves the rehabilitation and other repairs to the Roosevelt Boulevard Bridge. The work on the eastern half of the bridge was completed in early May 2017. There are 31 spans to the bridge and 17 spans are slated for construction during this second phase of construction. Five of the 17 spans require complete replacement of the reinforced concrete bridge deck from curb to curb. Replacing these decks involves saw cutting and/or jackhammering the existing concrete deck into smaller, more manageable pieces for removal. The new decks will consist of high performance concrete with new epoxy-coated reinforcement steel that will be more resistant to the corrosion caused by the intrusion of salts.
The other 12 spans in this construction phase are in good condition and have not required many repairs over the years to their concrete deck. The decks in theses spans will have the top 3-inches of the concrete deck removed through a hydro-demolition process. This process sprays water on to the deck under high pressure at approximately 3,000 pounds per square inch to remove the concrete. The wastewater is collected and disposed of at a sewage treatment plant. The reinforcement steel is cleaned and the decks are overlaid with high performance concrete.
The main span over the navigation channel requires the strengthening of various structural steel members and these repairs will be made while the bridge deck has been removed.
Other work in the project involves repairs to the bridge railing system; replacement of the deck joint systems; and upgrade to the approach guide rail systems.
Variable message signs advising motorists of the bridge closure have already been put into place and will remain on the project to advise of motorists of the one lane operation for controlling traffic
The one lane operation for traffic is expected run until May 3, 2018. Inbound motorists to Ocean City are suggested to use the Ninth Street Causeway into Ocean City to avoid traffic congestion related to the bridge deck construction.
This work is part of the County’s $6,482,463 construction contract awarded by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders to South State, Inc. on September 13, 2016 The construction operations are being overseen by Maser Consulting P.A., Egg Harbor Township, NJ.
