CREST HAVEN – The County of Cape May will be undertaking a roadway improvement project on Lafayette Street (CR 633) in the City of Cape May starting on February 21, 2023. The improvements will include the resurfacing of the roadway beginning just west of Perry Street and extending the entire road length to Sydney Avenue. In addition to resurfacing the roadway, the project will include the installation of new concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. Extensive drainage improvements are also planned as upgrades to the existing traffic signals at Madison Avenue and Ocean Avenue.

A right turn lane will be constructed adjacent to the southbound lane approaching St. John’s Street, a drop-off area will be constructed in front of the Cape May Elementary school, and more defined travel lanes will be created at the Broad Street intersection.

The project will be constructed in two phases, with the first phase starting on February 21, with an anticipated completion date of May 25, 2023. This phase of work will begin west of Perry Street and end at Ocean Street. The second phase of work will begin in September with a May 18, 2024, completion date.

In order to accommodate phase one construction activities, starting February 21, 2023, a portion of Lafayette Street between Jackson Street and Madison Avenue will be closed to traffic. Southbound through traffic will continue heading south from the Lafayette Street Bridge and then will be detoured onto Madison Avenue (CR 653).

Traffic will then continue to travel southeast along Madison Avenue to Beach Avenue (CR 604), where they can continue heading in a westerly direction to Broadway Avenue (CR 626).

Northbound Lafayette Street traffic approaching Jackson Street will detour southeast onto Jackson Street and then to Beach Avenue. Traffic will then continue east along Beach Avenue to Madison Avenue where they will turn and continue heading northwest along Madison Avenue to Lafayette Street.

Local residents will always have access to their homes and business access will be maintained. Due to the limited cartway width and the potential impacts of the construction activities both during and after normal work hours, the detour is anticipated to remain in place at night and on the weekends.

Local traffic entering the work zones is cautioned to proceed slowly and with care since during this phase of construction, the roadway surface will be uneven and narrowed due to the construction.
