LOWER TOWNSHIP — How does your road rank?
Lower Township Engineer Mark Sray, of Mott MacDonald, and Gary Douglass, Superintendent of Public Works reported to council and members of the public the results of a road surface evaluation on all the township roads.
Mott MacDonald researched all the township roads throughout the month of February and ranked each roadway on a numerical scale of one, being the worst, to 6, being the best. The evaluation took into consideration the overall condition, defects, cracks, pot holes, sink holes and overall ride quality.
The result was a 30 page document of roadway segment that was sorted by ward and then condition. For example, ten road segments in Ward 1 scored a two, meaning that they should be considered a priority for reconstruction.
The evaluation was then given to Douglass, who told council the public works department can review and can add factors such as drainage and infrastructure issues to the plan, which could change the road priority.
Douglass also suggested to council that a moratorium be placed on newly reconstructed streets in order to further protect roadways.
Lower Township Manager Jim Ridgway said that the council will discuss the roadway evaluation and focus on the streets that would be a priority in each ward with an overall goal to do 30 road segments initially.
