WEST CAPE MAY – Beginning April 23, South State, Inc., Bridgeton, is slated to resurface Broadway/Seashore Road, County Road No. 626 from West Cape May Borough Hall driveway to the Jonathan Hoffman Road connector on the north side of the bridge over the Cape May Canal. This work consists of milling or removing some of the existing asphalt pavement to the proper grade and then placing a two-inch thick asphalt surface course.
The work will be performed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night to reduce the impact on traffic. The work is expected to take three nights to complete. The travel lanes will be milled and paved the first two nights and the third night will involve the paving of shoulders and tying into the intersecting side streets.
One lane will be closed and northbound traffic will be detoured around the work area each night. Northbound motorists are advised to use West Perry Street to Lafayette Street to NJ Route 109 to US Route 9 during the paving operations. Southbound motorists are advised that they may experience delays during the milling and paving operations. During the day, the roadway will be open, however there will be a drop-off or a lip between the paved and non-paved areas. Motorists should use caution when transiting this area until the paving operations are completed.
Once the paving is complete, new pavement stripes and markings will be installed.
Beginning April 30, Broadway between Leaming Avenue and Central Avenue will be closed to all through traffic to permit the construction of concrete pavers at the driveway to West Cape May Borough Hall. Motorists will be detoured from Broadway to Leaming Avenue to Central Avenue and then back to Broadway. Local businesses are open and are accessible on Broadway. A temporary access is being provided to West Cape May Borough Hall and can be reached on Broadway from Central Avenue. The concrete paver construction closure is expected to be completed and reopen to traffic on or about May 11.
The work being performed under this construction contract is weather dependent. Any inclement weather will disrupt the proposed schedule.
South State, Inc. is performing the work under a $1,454,147.54 construction contract that was awarded by the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders Nov. 14, 2017. In addition to the milling and paving, the contract involved the installation of approximately 2,275 feet of concrete curb and the replacement of 3,170 square yards of concrete sidewalk. The sidewalks were brought into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
Urban Engineers, Inc. Cherry Hill, were the designers of the project. Pennoni Associates, Inc., Haddon Heights, has been providing the construction oversight.
