Monday, July 28, 2008, will be a day of brilliant bangles and breathtaking birds at the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary. Beginning 10 a.m. at Third Avenue and 113th Street, the Sanctuary will unveil a custom-designed Bird Sanctuary Destination Bracelet and officially open its new Meadow Walk.
The hand-crafted sterling silver Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Destination Bracelet features seven wraps of 14k gold wire to represent Seven Mile Island. The clasp is formed by a linked “S” and “H”, which is further adorned by a stylized egret, sun and waves.
The Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Bracelet was commissioned by Larry and Nancy Hanker of Neptune Jewels in Stone Harbor, and custom-created by renowned jewelry designer, Mitchell Ousley. Ousley has been designing maritime themed jewelry for over 25 years and made his name in the creation of his Destination Bracelet™ line eleven years ago.
The Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Destination Bracelet is available for purchase in 4mm size for $149.95 and in 6mm size for $174.95 exclusively at Neptune’s Jewels, located at 235 96th Street in Stone Harbor. The store will donate 20 percent of every bracelet sale to the Sanctuary to support its ongoing rejuvenation efforts.
“The Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Hook Bracelet is a true symbolic treasure created to exemplify one of Stone Harbor’s most precious gems,” said Dede Harris of the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary Advisory Committee. “Because this piece is so special, we have invited Mayor Suzanne Walters to the unveiling so she can present bracelets as gifts of appreciation to three of the Sanctuary’s most dedicated volunteers.”
Also on hand at the unveiling will be Ousley himself, who has designed Destination Bracelets™ for Key West, Florida and Ocean City, Maryland. Ousley currently lives and works in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with his wife Lori Sheller Ousley, a South Jersey native, and his two children, Annabelle and Aidan.
July 28 will also mark the official opening of the Sanctuary’s Meadow Walk, a new 210-foot trail that winds through both a fresh water meadow and a saltwater marsh. The diverse habitats offer visitors chances to observe colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets and herons as well as songbirds like warblers, thrushes and wrens.
