A special seasonal presentation, “Tales of Spirits, Spooks, and Strangers,” is offered for adults at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27 at the Upper Cape Branch Library, 2050 Route 631, Petersburg, where the pineland setting lends an eerie ambiance to the program.
Legendary singer and storyteller Jim Albertson entertains with spooky folk tales and songs of South Jersey. It is suggested that very young children not attend this program.
The evening consists of traditional folk tales and songs, some of which are drawn from South Jersey customs.
A song sets the scene for the story of a hunter who encounters a strange old man in the Piney woods who leads him on a search for the legendary creature, the Jersey Devil.
In another story the skeleton woman and the old witch of the pines become locked in a strange battle of wits; while the origin of the Jack-O-lantern is explored in a classic tale to see if good wins out over evil. Be prepared to be scared!
Jim Albertson is a folk performer, active teacher of speech arts, oral interpretation, acting and theater arts, and is an actor and director for community theater projects.
Albertson conducted a weekly folk music radio show, served as director of the Hayes House, was a member of the “The Bottle Hill Boys,” authored N.J. Folklore Sampler, and recorded “The Down Jersey.”
Albertson was awarded the NJ Folk Festival’s Second Annual Award for Distinguished Contribution to Folk Music in New Jersey.
