NORTH WILDWOOD — On Sat., March 24th, the Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church—the only Orthodox parish in Cape May County—will be holding local civic celebrations honoring the 191st anniversary of Greek Independence.
Under the leadership of Honorary Chairpersons (Former Sheriff James Plousis, Wildwood Solicitor Marcus Karavan, Chairman Dr. Lester Katsanis, Parish Council President William Mitchell, and The Rev. Steven Vlahos), the Greek American Community of Cape May County will be leading the civic observances starting at 12 p.m. at the North Wildwood Community Center. Similar ceremonies will be held at Wildwood City Hall at 12:30 p.m., Wildwood Crest City Hall at 1 p.m., and with the Cape May County Freeholders at 1:30 p.m.
The civic observances at each location will include a brief program consisting of hymns and songs preformed by the children of the St. Demetrios Hellenic School under the direction of Rita Handley.
The parish itself will hold the celebration of Greek Independence on Sun., March 25th. The celebration will be conducted by the PTO, which will include the Hellenic School children after worship services.
This annual celebration commemorates the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the restoration of the Greek Nation after almost 400 years of occupation by the Ottoman Empire.
