Spring Programs set for younger children

By On Deck Staff

Although it may not feel like it just yet, spring is just around the corner, and the Nature Center of Cape May, near the Coast Guard base, at 1600 Delaware Avenue, has some natural treats in store for young children and families.
The nature center’s popular toddler program, “Mommy and Me,” resumes for the spring session beginning February 27.
“Mommy and Me” is a weekly, eight-session program from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. There is no class on Friday, April 10.
Under the direction of New Jersey Audubon naturalist Kim Hannum, the hands-on program is for children between the ages of two and four years, along with their favorite adult.
Each week participants explore a different aspect of the natural world through a combination of stories, songs, self-guided play, crafts, and outdoor walks.
“We plan to meet some live animals, plant some spring flowers, and head outside to play,” said Hannum.
The “Mommy and Me” program fee is $80 for the eight-week session, discounted to $60 for NJAS members.
Space is limited, and pre-registration is strongly suggested. Adult participation is required.
Naturalist Paige Cunningham invites children ages four and up to join her for an evening stroll entitled “Under a Full Moon” on Friday, March 13, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Villas Wildlife Management Area (VWMA). Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Under the light of a full moon, Cunningham will lead a walk through the preserve in search of wildlife, listening to the night sounds, smelling the night air, and enjoying the moonlight glow along the way.
The program fee is $10 adults and $7 children ages three to 12, discounted to $8 adults and $5 children for New Jersey Audubon members. Children under three are admitted free.
Call the Nature Center of Cape May at 609-898-8848 to pre-register for these programs and get directions to VWMA.
