CREST HAVEN—On Oct. 15, the Cape May County Special Services School District held its board meeting to address a variety of district issues ranging from a financial presentation to an energy report to an upcoming fundraiser. Since the district’s educational commitment is to students with special needs, a rich variety of programs are offered focusing on the emotional, intellectual, social, and physical needs of the students.
The upcoming fundraiser on Nov. 1 will be held at the Wildwoods Convention Center. Superintendent Barbara J. Makoski affirmed that the purpose of the fundraiser is “to raise money for a variety of projects” to enhance the educational environment of this unique school. The 16th annual fund raising event will aid in developing a variety of educational projects that will ultimately benefit the students.
One of the main focuses of the fundraiser will be to raise money for the Media Center project. The proposed new Media Center will provide an “updated, visually appealing experience,” the superintendent said. Library Concepts will be responsible for the creation of the new media center. Superintendent Makowski explained that this company “develops and designs library spaces up and down the east coast.”
A deeply committed educator, Makowski received a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. Prior to her current position, she held various positions in educational administration for several years.
The purpose of the new Media Center will be to “incorporate current technology, and update for a fresher look.” The superintendent explained that the “Cape May County Special Services Education Foundation has raised over $750,000 since its inception for items such as a handicapped accessible playground, lift systems, school to work vans, augmentative communication devices, equipment for occupational, physical and speech therapy, restaurant equipment for vocational programs, grants for Tolerance through the Art assemblies, mini grants for innovative programming, and much more.”
