Seven Mile 3.29.2006

By Rick Racela

Our American Legion, Stephen C. Ludlam Post # 331 is actively seeking to have their building, Tatham’s Life Saving Station, added to the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places.
They recently received notice that the building is eligible for listing on the Registers.
The Life Saving Station, located at 117th Street and Second Avenue, is the oldest building in Stone Harbor and possibly on Seven Mile Beach.
It was built in 1895 and was used by the U.S. Life Saving Service to rescue shipwreck survivors until 1915 when the Life Saving Service was discontinued.
The building was taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard and was used as a lookout for German U-Boats during World War I & II.
The Ludlam Post acquired the building in 1948 and it has been the home of the American Legion Post since then.
The American Legion Post serves all of Seven Mile Beach.
They organize and conduct the Stone Harbor Memorial Day Parade and conduct and participate in ceremonies honoring our veterans through the year.
The 110 year-old building is costly to maintain.
The designation as a Historic Place and the Certificate of Eligibility will allow the Post to compete for grants and matching funds to help with the preservation and maintenance.
You can support the American Legion’s Restoration program by sending your check to the Stephen C. Ludlam Post 331, PO Box # 232, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247.
To see a picture of the building as it looked originally, go to the on-line version of my column at the Herald website, www.CapeMayCountyHerald.com. Click on News, then News Notes, then Seven Mile.
