Schaad gives lecture at library

By On Deck Staff

The Cape May County Library invites the public to a lecture by local journalist, Jacob Schaad, author of “No Time to Retire” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 6 at the Lower Township Public Library, 2600 Bayshore Rd., Villas.Jacob Schaad’s autobiography, “No Time to Retire,” recalls many stories, some humorous and some sad he experienced as a veteran newspaperman for sixty-eight years, eighteen of which he worked as a courthouse newspaper reporter. Schaad raises some provocative issues, questioning whether journalism should establish its own ethics committee, such as in the legal and medical professions; and also whether a defendant’s rights are violated when photographers are allowed in the courtroom to take photos of the defendants in prison garb, shackles and handcuffs, although the defendants are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Schaad’s long career which began at the Paterson Evening News and continued as a free-lance writer at the Philadelphia Bulletin, The Inquirer, The Press of Atlantic City and as a full-time reporter for the Gazette Leader publications in Cape May County, New Jersey. Schaad spent almost twelve years as news editor for Upsala College and served thirty-nine months in the Army Air Corps as a writer during World War II.Throughout his career Schaad interviewed such movie stars as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant and Jane Fonda. He covered major murder trials including the first Hurricane Carter case and the Edgar Smith trial, both of which attracted national attention. Additionally, he interviewed former President Harry Truman who gave a salty reply when he asked him a question. Schaad is a resident of Lower Township, New Jersey.Copies of the author’s book will be available for sale and signing.
