S. Seaville Congregation Dedicates New Church

By Helen McCaffrey

SOUTH SEAVILLE – On June 10, 2011 fire burned to the ground South Seaville United Methodist Church (circa 1884) on Corson Tavern Road. On Sept. 7, another fire saw the reopening of a newly-constructed church building on that same spot.
The second fire was enkindled by the spirit of the congregation which determined, while embers of the old building were still warm, that they would rebuild. Their efforts resulted in the structure being consecrated on a Sunday three years later.
The church was packed with a standing-room-only crowd of a few hundred people. Congregation member Mark Gibson spoke naming the many that had worked so hard and given so much to make the day possible.
He was followed by his son, Jake, who reminded all that the rebuilding was the fulfillment of the will of God. “Our work has just begun” said Gibson. He urged the congregation “get involved” with the many church projects. They include a new pre-school whose director is Patricia Perry. It will be called “The Learning Garden.”
Many other members led the singing or read from Scripture including the first confirmation student Samantha Sigars. The new facilities have a state-of-the-art kitchen and a social hall as well as programs for the children.
“Organize a ham and oyster dinner,” Gibson urged.
The pastor Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Perry directed the formal consecration leading official prayers of the consecration. President of the trustees and Cape Atlantic District Superintendent Brian Roberts handed the keys to the pastor.
Attorney and trustee James Pickering Jr. thanked the Rebuilding Committee members and trustees for all they had done.
When the religious services were concluded, a final Benediction was offered. Perry and all were invited for refreshments in the social hall decorated for the occasion. The spirit of the congregation had risen from the ashes and filled the new space.
