WOODBINE — Independents of Woodbine took control of Borough council Tuesday night led by Mayor William Pikolycky in a landslide victory over Republican, Julia Hankerson. Pikolycky received more than 65 percent of the votes.
Pikolycky has served as a councilman since January 1979 until his election as mayor in 1990; he has since been undefeated.
Hankerson told the Herald Tuesday night she had congratulated the mayor on his victory and hoped her challenging him would make him think harder about the needs of the children and senior citizens of Woodbine.
“I ran for the kids because I thought they should have more. The majority of the people voted for the mayor, the majority of the people must be happy with him and don’t feel the children and senior citizens need more and God Bless them” she said. “I guess they think they have everything they need now but I still hope he will provide more for the kids and senior citizens.”
Pikolycky was unreachable for comment late Tuesday night.
Incumbent Eduardo “Chino” Ortiz and newcomer Mary Helen Perez also took a commanding lead in the polls over Republican Councilman Douglas Watkins and newcomer Roger Geene.
Republicans Clarence Ryan and Louis Murry now sit as the minority party on council.
